Sports Premium Funding 2014-2015

Total PE and Sport Funding this academic year:  £9805

Brief overview of PE and sport provision in the school (prior to September 2014):

At Templenewsam Halton Primary School, the PE Leader, Mrs Rossiter has had the responsibility of developing PE and sport and deciding upon the effective use of Sport Premium funding.  Our children, parents and staff recognise that we have a good reputation for sport within our school and our Trust.  We are constantly promoting healthy eating, a healthy and active lifestyle and we aspire to provide all our pupils with two hours of sport per week.  We have welcomed this additional sports funding, which have used to further enhance our PE provision and it has supported our aim to increase participation in our after school clubs.  In the last year we have spent the 2013/2014 monies in the following ways:

  • CPD opportunities
  • Coaches providing specialist teaching
  • SSCO support from Temple moor High School
  • Support regular sporting competitions, festivals and tournaments through our SGO and within our Trust
  • Wimbledon week
  • Tour de France extravaganza
  • Additional swimming lessons for year 6 children
  • Key Stage One after school clubs
  • Equipment

Evidence of impact

We have found teachers have an improved skill level through attending courses and through observing and supporting coaches in teaching specific aspects of PE.  They have developed in their knowledge of the subject and they have more enthusiasm and passion for teaching PE.

The SSCO has delivered ‘What a good to outstanding PE lesson looks like’ further developing staffs knowledge and understanding of the subject.  She has also been responsible for providing the schools in the Trust with a competition calendar allowing an increase rate in competition between the children in our school and other schools.

We have had a tennis coach in school, raising the profile of Wimbledon and tennis.  All classes received a tennis lesson in small groups, allowing high quality teaching to be delivered, allowing skill development to be maximised.

The school held cycling competitions within our year groups and then the overall winners were selected to take part in a city wide Tour De France competition at Templenewsam House.  Our school was also used as a pilot school to raise the awareness of cycling within Leeds.  Therefore raising the profile of cycling and a healthy lifestyle within our school.

We want all our children to leave year 6 able to swim 25m.  Therefore we supported the children that found this a challenge with an intensive 6 week swimming block.  This increased children’s confidence and swimming ability in the water, allowing all our children to leave year 6 achieving their 25m certificate.

We provided after school clubs for key stage one, allowing more children to be physically active and develop their love of sport.  As a result of this more Key Stage One afterschool clubs will be offered next year.

The money has also been used to buy equipment, allowing high quality PE lessons to be delivered within our curriculum lessons.

School PE and Sport development priorities based on our school context and identified pupil need:

  1. To continue to develop teacher’s skills and knowledge of teaching specific aspects of PE through CPD opportunities, support from SSCO and coaches.
  2. To increase the range, participation and competition in after school clubs through links with extended services and our SSCO.
  3. To track participation and attendance levels of specific groups of children accessing after school clubs e.g. SEN, pupil premium children etc
  4. To raise the profile of PE on our school website and learning platform to inform parents and children about the sporting opportunities in our school.
  5. To collect evidence together to apply for the Sainsbury’s games mark and the Youth Sports Trust mark

Quality Assurance. What systems are in place to ensure value for money and the involvement of the school leadership team, including the Governing Body, in overseeing the effectiveness of the projects?

The PE policy is written by the PE leader and moderated and evaluated with staff before being reviewed by the Head Teacher and Governors.  The policy is reviewed every three years unless circumstances change.  The Governors subcommittee also evaluate the Sports Premium spending to ensure value for money and links to the school’s objectives.  Evaluations are shared with senior leaders and staff where required.  This ensures that the money is spent on the correct objectives allowing good progress to be made and standards in PE to be raised even further.  Regular discussions between the Head Teacher and PE leader further ensure that the money is having a positive impact on children’s learning.
